Who or What is Yeti?

Yeti is a cryptid and the subject of numerous mythologies and legends. Also known as Nee-gued, Bear-man, or The Abominable Snowman, The Yeti is said to inhabit Tibetan Himalayas in Central Asia, with reported sightings dating back to folklore by local, native peoples.

  • Physical Description

    Most reported Yeti sightings describe a large, hairy, ape-like creature, with several variations of black, white, or reddish fur, standing between 3-15 feet tall and weighing up to 600 pounds.

  • Regional Presence

    The Himalayan Mountains are the traditional home to the Yeti, with native tribes worshiping a "Glacier Being" as a God of the Hunt. Reports of the Yeti are not limited to the Himalayan Mountains, with similar large, hairy creatures reported in various parts of the Russia they call the Chuchuna.

  • Cultural Significance

    The Yeti has often been depicted in popular culture, from TV shows to films and books. In the1964 Rankin/Bass special Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Yeti chases Rudolph and his friends. In the Monsters, Inc. franchise he was banished to the Himalayas after working in the mailroom. Yeti stalks California in R.L. Stein's Goosebumps, The Abominable Snowman of Pasadena.

  • Belief and Skepticism

    While there is a large camp of believers, criticism and skepticism abound, leading to a debate about the authenticity of various sightings.

The Evidence for Yeti

Despite skepticism, over the years credible and scientifically supported evidence has emerged to support the existence of Bigfoot.

  • Footprints

    Footprints found, casts of them, dating back to the early 20th century, all seem similar in anatomical detail, have dermal ridges and unique dermal features. Some even claim that the features seen in these prints are consistent only with the unknown cryptid.

  • Audio Recordings

    Mysterious audio recordings from Yeti territory reveal unidentified sounds. Experts suggest Yeti's vocal range may exceed that of any known primate.

  • Exploration Reports

    Famous explorer Sir Edmond Hillary, the first Englishman to scale Mount Everest, searched for the Yeti following reports in 1958 by a previous explorer, Eric Shipton, who found footprints in the snow and brought the world the Sherpa word for "wild man" - Yeti.

  • Varieties of Yeti

    Yeti are said to come in three different classes, according to native Tibetan lore; the Nyalamo, Chuti, and Rang Shim Bombo.

Yeti Varieties

Three distinct variety of Yeti have been described by explorers and local Tibetan lore.

  • Nyalmo

    The largest and fiercest of the Yeti, Nyalmo are said to have black fur, standing around fifteen feet tall. They are reported to roam in groups, remaining well above the snowline about 4000 meters.

  • The Chuti

    The Chuti is the classically depicted Yeti. Standing roughly eight feet tall, having light to all white fur, these solitary creatures remain near the snow line between 1800 and 3500 meters about sea level.

  • Rang Shim Bombo

    This smaller variety of Yeti is only 3-5 feet tall, with reddish-brown fur. Some claim these are merely orangutans, but the question still then remains: How are orangutans surviving in the inhospitable environment of the highest mountains in the world?
